Short Bio

My husband had Bulbar ALS for over 3 years.  He passed away May 3, 2021.  I was his main caregiver and kept him at home until the last 10 days when he went into Hospice Care at a local Hospice Center.  He had a hard time getting a correct diagnosis which is so common for ALS.  It is a disease of elimination.  There was an article about a 26 yr old man with possible Bulbar ALS.  He was asking for help and this is one time I felt I could contribute.  It is unusual for someone so young but not unheard of since we had caregivers of younger patients in our ALS community Zoom meetings.  It breaks my heart because my husband passed away at 72.  He had many good years that these younger folks are missing.

How long have you or the person that you are caring for had ALS?

My husband was diagnosed with ALS in January 2019 although we knew he had it long before that. Other family and friends felt the same way. It was the Neurologists that didn't want to diagnose it. We ended up going to the University of Miami ALS Clinic and he was given a definitive diagnosis. This was 2 years after going to his first Neurologist and ALS Clinic.
