The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has launched its annual MDA Shamrocks campaign, described as the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Day-themed fundraiser, to support people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other rare neuromuscular diseases.
During the campaign, held throughout February and March, thousands of retailers across the country invite customers to round up the cost of their purchases, or donate $1, $5, or more at checkout. Those who donate can write their names on paper Shamrock pinups displayed in stores to show their support.
More than four decades of fundraising impact
“For more than 44 years this program has raised nearly $400 million leading to over 30 FDA approved treatments for neuromuscular conditions in just the past decade,” Ruth Ann Dailey, MDA’s chief development officer, said in a press release. “The MDA Shamrocks retail campaign has brought communities together to advance our mission through the incredible support of our retail partners and gives real hope to families.”
Funds raised through the campaign support MDA’s nationwide efforts to advance research, expand access to specialized care at MDA Care Centers, and provide educational programs, summer camps, and advocacy initiatives for people living with ALS and other rare neuromuscular diseases.
“The generosity of [our retail partners’] employees and customers helps accelerate progress and ensures families living with neuromuscular disease have the care, resources, and support they need to thrive,” Dailey said.
In addition to in-store donations, supporters can donate $45 or more online to receive the limited-edition 2026 MDA Shamrocks T-shirt, while supplies last.
The white shirt, featuring a green shamrock leaf design reflecting the hope and progress of the campaign, was created by Matthew Plummer, a volunteer member of MDA’s board of directors. For Plummer, who lives with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic disease marked by progressive muscle weakness, the campaign is deeply personal.
“Designing the 2026 MDA Shamrocks T-shirt was deeply meaningful as we look ahead to the next 75 years of progress at the Muscular Dystrophy Association,” he said. “As a father living with SMA, I see how that research directly changes what the future looks like. I designed this shirt as a nod to the scientific advancements made possible through MDA’s work.”
Retail partners power nationwide fundraising effort
This year’s Shamrocks campaign is supported by national and regional retail partners, including fuel and convenience stores such as Florida Turnpike Services, grocery chains like Market 32/Price Chopper, pharmacy retailers such as Discount Drug Mart, and restaurant groups such as TEAM Schostak Family Restaurants.
These partners — alongside longstanding supporters such as CITGO Petroleum Corporation, the National Association of Letter Carriers, and the Distributive Education Clubs of America — are participating in the nationwide campaign to support MDA’s mission.
In addition to in-store fundraising, volunteers and community supporters can organize Shamrock sales at schools, in local communities, and at events nationwide.
