Dr. Richard Lewis is a globally recognized authority in neuromuscular medicine, perhaps best known for his discovery and characterization of Lewis-Sumner syndrome , a multifocal variant of CIDP. Throughout his career, he has been a primary architect of clinical infrastructure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and inflammatory neuropathies. Dr. Lewis has a distinguished history of establishing centers of excellence across the United States

  • A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (Neurology residency and EMG fellowship), Dr. Lewis continues to lead high-impact research at Cedars-Sinai.

Published Works

  • His extensive bibliography focuses on neuroinflammation and therapeutic strategies to mitigate functional decline in diseases such as CIDP, GBS, and ALS.

Professional Accomplishments

  • ALS & Neuromuscular Programs: He played a pivotal role in establishing the Neuromuscular Program and Adult Muscular Dystrophy/ALS Clinic at the University of Connecticut, and later directed the Hiller ALS Center at Wayne State University.
  • Executive Roles: He has served as Vice Chief of Neurology at Harper University Hospital and Associate Clinical Chair of Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
  • Global Standards: A key voice in international neurology, he is the Past-President of the Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS) and co-authored both the 2021 EAN/PNS CIDP Guidelines and the 2023 GBS Guidelines.
