Curling (contracting) fingers
Posted by jalves on October 4, 2024 at 8:05 amHello all.
The fingers in my hands are curling inwards for some months .
The physical Therapist made me this ortotheses to prevent the curling.
How do you guys deal with this curling fingers effect of ALS, exercises/movements, etc?

Unfortunately I didn’t realize what happening when my left hand fingers started curling now they are frozen into a claw. I’m going to see a physical therapist to get a splint so my right hand doesn’t become a claw. I wish I had seen this subject when my left hand started curling! Thanks for sharing your information.

I had this problem when I was first diagnosed and bought finger straightening rings on Amazon that I wore faithfully at night and they helped a lot. Good news – bad news.. once I lost all control of that hand and arm, they straightened out.

I take my left hand and bend back the fingers of my right hand and hold it there. I place my thumb across the top of the right hand right on my knuckles with all my other fingers under my right fingers and bend it up. I also will slip my curling hand into tight spaces and bend my fingers backwards. Last while driving in the car I’ll ask my wife to bend my fingers backwards and hold them there as long as possible.
This has helped over the years but my right middle finger won’t straighten out as much as the other 4 fingers. I’ve asked 2 physical therapist about making something to hold them straight or better yet bent backwards but never got anything. The pain it causes is like relieving.

Also exercise fatigues my fingers. The more I try to just open and close the fingers they turn to mush and are just like hanging there.

Unfortunately, I’ve noticed my toes on my left foot have all curved under, too. They don’t bother me and I don’t walk very much anymore. I wonder what causes this phenomenon!
