Research for Mexiletine and cramps

ALS includes many symptoms including painful cramping. While taking care of my father when he had ALS, I saw him in a tremendous amount of pain from the cramping. He refused any treatment and refused to see any doctors. I hope that medications like this one are effective and are approved to treat ALS. Are you taking medications and what are the results? Has anyone participated in any of the trials for ALS drug research?
