A link between stress granules and pathological inclusions of TDP-43.
Misfolded and mislocated inclusions of the protein TDP-43 are found in most cases of ALS, but also at a lesser degree in FTD, Alzheimer and Parkinson.
While it was suspected since a long time that those inclusions have something in common with stress granules which are somewhat similar vesicles created by cells that are enduring critical stress, this was the subject of an intense debate between scientists.
The researchers think they have found a model of ALS which is more accurate than the previous ones (they are around 40 classical animal models of ALS).
In their model the stress is created with a poison based on arsenic, but more studies are needed to understand what is chronic stressors are experienced by motor neurons in patients.
