Stephen Hawking was the longest-living pALS (8 January 1942 – 14 March 2018). In 1963, at age 21, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neuron disease that gradually, over decades, paralyzed him. He continued to make significant contributions to our world. He contributed numerous discoveries in the field of physics, advocated for people with disabilities, and wrote many books in layman’s terms bringing physics to the masses.

What other people with ALS (or another rare disease) do you know that continued to make significant contributions and in what fields? Did they also become advocates?
