One of the ways I cope is to ask myself – – what changed, who or what can help me, is this ALS or something else not related to ALS… ?

I also view things with humor… lots of humor.

My faith and my sense of attitude are my coping methods. With my faith, either way, I’m a winner. I don’t think anyone wants to be around a whiner. I try to be upbeat and positive. I want people to smile when they think of me.

Managing symptoms can be a challenge at times! In the beginning I just kept trucking along and not focusing on symptoms until they became problematic. Perhaps there was a bit of denial going on. Now, I try to track symptoms and report then to the doctors as soon as I can. My voice has become raspy and at times I’m difficult to understand. I assumed that it was ALS. Last week I had a swallow test and I was happily surprised to learn I have acid reflux. Apparently it’s a pretty good case of it too! The SLP said there was a little muscle weakness, but not enough to be causing the symptoms I reported. Now, I’m learning to tackle symptoms head on!
