- Dutch Bros' Drink One for Dane fundraiser returns May 15 to support ALS awareness and research.
- ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes worsening muscle weakness and can affect movement, speech, swallowing, and breathing.
- The Dutch Bros Foundation and franchisees will donate $1 from every drink sold to support MDA’s ALS research and care efforts.
Dutch Bros is holding its annual Drink One for Dane Day of Giving fundraiser this Friday, May 15, with the Dutch Bros Foundation and franchisees donating $1 from every drink sold to support the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The event raises funds and awareness of the disease in honor of Dutch Bros co-founder Dane Boersma, who died from ALS in 2009. Contributions will come from purchases made at Dutch Bros locations, and customers will receive a special sticker with each drink they buy, while supplies last.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), helping support research, care, and efforts toward new treatments and a cure for people with ALS and other neuromuscular diseases.
“For nearly two decades, Drink One for Dane has held a meaningful place in the hearts of everyone at Dutch Bros and the Dutch Bros Foundation,” Tana Davila, chief marketing officer of Dutch Bros, said in a company press release. “Drink One for Dane is rooted in the legacy Dane built — not just as a co-founder, but as a driving force behind our deep commitment to giving back.”
Campaign could push MDA support past $20M
According to Dutch Bros, this year’s campaign could push the company’s lifetime support for the MDA past $20 million. That total includes contributions from Dutch Bros Coffee and the Dutch Bros Foundation, along with franchisees, vendors, and customers who have supported the campaign over the past two decades.
“We’re proud to carry it forward alongside the Muscular Dystrophy Association in supporting ALS research, care and the pursuit of a cure,” Davila added.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by the gradual loss of motor neurons, the nerve cells that control voluntary movement. As the disease advances, patients experience worsening muscle weakness and may eventually lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and breathe independently.
Dutch Bros was founded in 1992 by brothers Dane and Travis Boersma. Following Dane’s death, the Boersma family and the company created Drink One for Dane to honor his legacy and raise awareness and funds for ALS, with the goal of supporting research into effective treatments and a cure.
“Drink One for Dane is a powerful reminder of how one person’s legacy can inspire lasting change,” said Sharon Hesterlee, PhD, president and CEO of MDA. “As Dutch Bros works toward surpassing $20 million in lifetime support, we are deeply grateful for their partnership and commitment to the ALS community.”
Hesterlee said the funds are “critical to advancing research, accelerating the development of new treatments, and ensuring people living with ALS have access to the care and support they need today.”
“Together, we are honoring Dane’s legacy by driving progress and bringing hope to families nationwide,” she added.
Dutch Bros, which began in Grants Pass, Oregon, now has more than 1,150 locations across 25 states. The drive-thru coffee company said giving back remains central to its mission through local efforts and annual company-wide campaigns.
