In this TEDx Talks video, Steven Boeynaems explains that although we have known about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for 140 years, scientists still know very little about the condition that affects around 200,000 people worldwide.

Boeynaems talks about the role of TDP-43 proteins and how the displacement of the protein within cells has been discovered in ALS patients. He explains some of the research microbiologists have been conducting with familiar ALS genes over the years and describes the discoveries made.

The more scientists understand how the cells become mutated, the more likely effective treatments and medications will be produced to slow down, reverse and cure the disease.
