  • Do you continue to see non-ALS doctors for annual health screens?

Besides regular visits to my ALS neurologist, I have kept up my annual health screens with other specialists. Such as going to the dentist and the dermatologist. But for some screenings, such as bone density, my doctor advised me to stop. She reasoned that since ALS patients eventually use wheelchairs and their bones become soft…the test is no longer necessary.

Do you continue to see non-ALS doctors for annual health screens? If yes, which ones? And what do you no longer do?

I regularly keep up with eye, skin, and dental visits. I find these doctors and their staff accommodate my ALS needs and understand my particular goals.

I continue to see eye, dental and dermatology. I have let any other screenings go.

My dentist and periodontist clean my teeth every three months. I’m unable to do very much on my own and they are super accommodating, doing as much as they are able. (I have bulbar onset ALS so my mouth is less than cooperative.) I see my eye doctor and PCP since I also have thyroid disease. I keep up with vaccinations but refuse most tests.

Sure I do. Have to keep my “support” systems going. Dentist, cardiologist, PCP, dermatologist are all regularly scheduled along with regular neuro and ALS clinic visits.
