Every ALS patient has a unique journey with the disease, and we want to help our bodies cope as best we can. This includes improving our daily nutrition.

I was a lacto-ovo-vegetarian at the time of my diagnosis. My doctor told me to eat more protein, so now I include animal meats, and the change helped me have more energy.

How have you changed your diet since being diagnosed?

I was encouraged by the dietician at the ALS Clinic to increase my protein intake and reduce sugar intake. As my throat muscles are becoming a little weaker so I’ve added protein shakes. I do eat a lot of fruit, and fresh vegetables.

Yes, Amanda… more protein is a good thing 😉

I found that taking smaller bites of food helps with swallowing. Also, training myself (and my dining companions) not to expect me to eat and talk at the same time. 🙂
