Talking to a loved one with ALS
What was your first thought when you found out a loved one or friend had ALS? Did you know how to talk to them? What to say? Here are some things to consider:
1. How much do you and your pALS know about ALS?
2. Is your pALS ready to talk about his/her diagnoses?
3. Carefully choose your words and questions?
4. Be sensitive.
5. Understand that all reactions are normal (anger, depression, sadness, fear, anxiety, ect.)
6. Ask for permission before giving advice (Are they ready to hear advice? Does your pALS want advice)
7. Understand that their is a cycle or path to acceptance and it isn’t linear.
8. Before bringing up the subject make sure you are in a place where you can both feel secure that the conversation is private and free from distractions.
How did your conversation go? What advice and information can you share that would help others? Do you have other resources you can share?

Although ALS is not cancer, I found this website to have some good information that I thought our community could relate to.
