An unusual experiment in the peripheral nervous system
There are two hypotheses about the starting point of ALS in the anatomy. One hypothesis states that it starts in the motor cortex where reside upper neurons bodies, while the other hypothesis tells it starts at the other end of the motor pathway in the neuromuscular junction or even in the muscular fibers that the lower motor neurons axon innervates.
Few experiments have tried to alleviate ALS symptoms by administrating therapies in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). In 2003 Brian Kaspar (who invented Zolgensma) and his colleagues did an ingenious experiment in the PNS with some success. They injected a genetic therapy in a muscle of a mice, in order to express growth factors in the CNS of mice.
Now scientists from Spain have done something similar in mice with other growth factors, and also with some success.
