I love a fun challenge! Do you? May is the traditional kickoff for a multitude of ALS awareness and fundraising events. Like gala banquets, walk-a-thons, cookie sales, and more. But ever since the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge, some fundraisers lean towards the fun and crazy kind. Crazy, like eating hot chilis, not talking for a full day, swimming rivers, hiking mountains, and more. Videos are sure to go viral!

Because of the pandemic, this year’s awareness events mostly have gone virtual.

So far, I’ve only found one crazy event: the “Shave ALS Challenge.” This is where people are videoed having the hair on their head shaved off – – all except for a small patch on top – – which represents the great loss of life to ALS, and the small number of patients still alive. Then, the person calls out a few friend’s names to take the same challenge.  A few days ago, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps had his head shaved in the challenge! (Use hashtag #shaveALSchallenge to learn more)

Are you aware of any other unique events happening this month, or summer? Do you think unique events are even needed to raise awareness or dollars for ALS?
