Hi I read that there is a strong connection (negative) between Gluten and ALS.  Do people follow a gluten free diet?

I don’t currently, but seriously considering it.

Peter – – I have not read anything relating gluten (food source) with ALS. Only that pALS who are gluten-sensitive should follow a diet to accommodate their sensitivity. For anyone, pALS or non-pALS, if you are not gluten sensitive, there is no reason to avoid it; as food containing gluten do have additional nutrients needed by the body.

You may be confusing the issue with “glutamate” the by-product of oxidative stress in the body. Build up of glutamate is associated with death of motor neurons and Riluzole is supposed to help clear out excess glutamate. No amount of dieting or food restriction affects glutamate levels.
