  • How Do You Take a “Time Out” from ALS?

Having ALS is a 24/7 condition: no days off, rest periods or someone to step in and give you a break. One way to help take the pressure off of yourself is by learning to use self-care strategies.

Recently, I saw a poster listing a number of self-care actions (listed below) – – all great tips that we pALS (person with ALS) could benefit from doing.

What can you add to this list and what is your favorite way to take a ‘time out’ from your ALS? Or, what prevents you from adding self-care into your day?

    • Asking for help
    • Spending time alone
    • Putting yourself first
    • Setting boundaries
    • Saying ‘no’
    • Forgiving yourself

My time outs include closing the cover of my laptop, moving to another room and spending about 20-30 minutes knitting or crocheting while listening to Prairie Home Companion. My mind is transported away from my work/writing and I relax at the show’s offbeat humor.
